Bio Basics: The Quiz

What is the unique and specific purpose of the Bio in a book proposal?

To prove that I have related credentials to the topic I'm writing about.
To indicate that I am currently known as a subject matter expert (media, awards, published papers, speaking, etc.)
To show the publisher that I make money off of this content already, which indicates to them that they will make money off me and my content.
To list every single thing I've ever done or might do that could sell my book.
To introduce them to me personally by mentioning my dog, my kids and my favorite pastimes.
To tell them frankly that I have never done a single thing to market myself as a thought leader on this topic, but that once they sign my book, I'll figure it out…somehow…eventually

How long should your Bio be and why?

1-1.5 pages long with a small "wallet-sized" photo embedded in the upper right hand corner.
As long as it needs to be to list all my accomplishments.
It should be about as long as the author's bio on a book jacket, and written in the same style.

When is the best time to start (or ramp up) your marketing?
